How to Clean Gold Earrings at Home (Without Damaging Them)

If you wear your gold earrings every day (and I hope you do), at some point they'll start looking a little dull. That's not the gold changing. It's just soap, lotion and everyday life building up on them.
The good news: you don't need anything fancy to get them shiny again. This is the exact routine I use for my own studs.
What you'll need
- A small bowl of warm water (not hot)
- Mild dish soap, just a few drops
- A soft toothbrush (a baby toothbrush is perfect)
- A soft cloth or microfiber towel
How to clean gold earrings, step by step

Take off the backs Unscrew the backs and put everything in the bowl. Do this over a towel, not the sink. Trust me on this one. |

Let them soak Leave them in the warm soapy water for about 10 minutes so the buildup loosens. |

Brush gently Use the soft toothbrush on the front, the post and inside the screw back. The threads are where most of the buildup hides. |

Rinse and pat dry Rinse with clean warm water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Let them air dry for a few minutes before putting them back in. |
What NOT to use
- Toothpaste or baking soda. They're abrasive and can leave tiny scratches.
- Bleach or strong cleaners. Harsh chemicals can damage gold over time, especially 10K and 14K.
- Paper towels or tissues. They're rougher than they look. Stick to a soft cloth.
- Ultrasonic cleaners on enamel pieces. Fine for plain gold, but they can chip enamel or loosen small stones.
How often should you clean them?
If you wear your earrings 24/7 like I do, a quick clean every 2 to 3 weeks keeps them shiny. And if your ears ever feel a little itchy, give them a clean. Most of the time it's buildup, not the earring.

Solid gold doesn't tarnish or turn green, so you can shower and sleep in it every day. The only time I take mine out is for pools and hot tubs, because chlorine isn't great for gold over time. Everything else? Leave them in.
What about gold-plated jewelry?
Same gentle routine, just go even softer with the brush and skip the long soak. Plating is a thin layer, so the less rubbing, the longer it lasts.

FAQs
Can I shower with solid gold earrings?
Yes. Solid 10K and 14K gold won't rust, tarnish or turn your ears green, so showering is totally fine.
Why do my gold earrings look dull?
Usually it's buildup from soap, shampoo, lotion or skin oils. A quick clean with warm soapy water brings the shine right back.
Can I use vinegar to clean gold?
I don't recommend it. Mild dish soap and warm water work just as well and are much gentler.
How do I clean the screw back?
Soak it with the earring and brush inside the hole with a soft toothbrush. If a back ever goes missing in the process, I sell replacement 10K gold screw backs.
