How to Build an Ear Stack: What to Wear in Every Piercing
Ear Stack Guide
Building an ear stack is one of my favorite things to help with. Back when I used to host piercing parties, the best part was always the same: standing in front of the mirror, trying different pieces and finding the combo that just felt like you.
There's no wrong way to do it, but there is an easy way. Here's how I'd build it, piercing by piercing.
First lobe hole
Start with your statement piece
This is where your favorite earring goes. Your first hole can handle something a little bigger, with a fun shape or a pop of color. Everything else in your stack will build around it.
Second hole
Add something with personality
Your second hole is where you can play. Go a little smaller than your first piece, but keep it interesting: a moon, a starfish, a little symbol that means something to you.
Upper lobe
Go long and sleek
Higher up on the lobe, a longer, slimmer piece makes the whole ear look more put together. A bar stud is perfect here. It draws the eye up and connects your lobe to your cartilage.
Cartilage & helix
Finish with tiny pieces
Up top, less is more. Tiny studs like a 3mm ball or a mini triangle look delicate and won't compete with the rest of your stack.
My little rules for a stack that works
- Go from big to small. Biggest piece at the bottom, tiniest at the top.
- Mix shapes, keep the metal. Circles, bars and symbols look great together when they're all the same gold.
- Buy singles. Most of my studs come as a single, so you can build a different look on each ear without buying pairs you won't use.
- Leave a little space. You don't need to fill every hole. Sometimes one empty spot makes the rest stand out.
💛 A note from Eli
All of my solid gold studs have a 20G post that's about 7mm long, so they work for lobes and most cartilage and helix piercings. If your lobe or cartilage is on the thicker side, the post might feel short. That's totally normal. Message me before you order and I'll help you figure out what fits.
Why solid gold for your stack
An ear stack is meant to stay in. Solid 10K and 14K gold won't turn green or irritate your skin, and screw backs keep every piece in place, so you can sleep and shower with your whole stack in.

Can I wear stud earrings in my cartilage or helix?
Yes. My studs have a 20G post that's about 7mm long, which works for most cartilage and helix piercings. If yours is a little thicker, message me and I'll help you check.
How many earrings should be in an ear stack?
There's no magic number. Three or four pieces on one ear is a great place to start, and you can keep adding over time.
Do both ears have to match?
Not at all. A mismatched stack looks more personal. That's why I sell most studs as singles.
Can I sleep with my ear stack in?
Yes, if it's solid gold with screw backs. The backs sit flat and stay locked on, so nothing slips off at night.
