Screw Back vs Push Back Earrings: Which Is Better?
Screw Back Guide
If you've ever woken up and found one earring on your pillow and the back nowhere to be found, this one's for you.
"Screw back or push back?" is honestly one of the questions I get asked the most. So here's everything I tell my customers, the good and the not-so-good, so you can pick what actually works for you.
What's the difference?
Push backs (also called butterfly or friction backs) are the classic ones most of us grew up with. You slide the back onto a smooth post and it stays there by pressure.
Screw backs work like a tiny jar lid. The post has a thread, and you twist the back on until it's snug. It can't slide off on its own, because it's literally screwed in.
| Push back | Screw back | |
|---|---|---|
| Stays in place | Can loosen over time | Locked on |
| Sleeping in them | Backs can slip off | Made for it |
| Putting them in | Super quick | Takes a little practice |
| Losing backs | Happens a lot | Rarely |
| Best for | Earrings you switch often | Everyday studs you leave in |
Why I chose screw backs for Liv Aura
When I started Liv Aura, I wanted to handpick studs you could put in and forget about. No taking them off at night, no checking your ears every few hours, no buying a new pair because one back disappeared in the sheets.
Push backs just couldn't promise that. Screw backs could. That's why every solid gold stud in my shop comes with a screw back.
Are screw backs for you?
Choose screw backs if you:
- Want to sleep and shower without taking your earrings off
- Have lost earring backs before (we've all been there)
- Are building an ear stack and want every piece to stay put
- Are buying earrings for kids, who are pros at losing backs
Push backs might be better if you:
- Change your earrings every day to match your outfit
- Have long nails and don't want to deal with tiny threads
💛 A note from Eli
I won't pretend screw backs are perfect. The first time, they can feel a little tricky, and that's normal. Give it two or three tries and it becomes second nature. After that, you honestly forget you're wearing them, and that's the whole point.
The metal matters too
A secure back only helps if you can actually leave the earring in. If the metal is plated or mixed with nickel, it can turn green, fade or irritate your skin after a few days. That's why every stud I choose is solid 10K or 14K gold. They're made to stay in your ears 24/7, even if you have sensitive ears.

Are screw back earrings more secure than push backs?
Yes. A push back is held on by pressure, so it can slowly loosen. A screw back is threaded onto the post, so it won't slide off unless you twist it.
Are screw backs comfortable to sleep in?
Yes. Once they're snug against your lobe, you won't feel them. That's the main reason people switch to them.
Can I put a screw back on a push back earring?
No. Screw backs need a threaded post to twist onto. A smooth push back post won't hold one.
Are screw backs hard to put in?
They take a little practice the first few times. Hold the front still and twist the back to the right until it feels snug. Here's my step-by-step guide.
What if I lose a screw back?
It's rare, but it happens. I sell replacement 10K solid gold screw backs on their own, so you never have to give up your favorite pair.
